There was great interest in Scanian startups when Christos Vaitsis from the EIT Health network visited SmiLe Incubator in Lund and Medeon Science Park in Malmö, to inform about opportunities for European funding within BioTech, MedTech and Digital Health.
– There are many opportunities for support for startups who want to get out in Europe, says Christos Vaitsis.
The information focused on the program part of EIT Health which is called Accelerator and offers everything from support to the person who is considering starting a company to the one who has a product or service ripe for an international launch. The program EIT Health Accelerator was introduced in Skåne in 2018 when Region Skåne decided to participate as Core Partner. During the first year, 13 Skåne companies applied for support from the Accelerator program, six of which received some form of support, and participated in value-creating activities.
“Given that the program was new to us in Skåne last year, we are satisfied with the result, but we are aiming for considerably more applications this year,” says Bengt Stavenow from Innovation Skåne, who coordinates Region Skåne’s membership.
Wide range of support
Within the Accelerator program there are opportunities to participate in so-called bootcamps to develop the company’s business idea, here there are about 100 Living Labs who welcome anyone who wants to test their product, many international investors available to discuss financial investment and a public equity fund. Anyone who wants to test their competitiveness with other startups in their area can participate in a competition that gives access to coaches who assist in developing both business concept and pitch.
This is EIT Health
EIT Health consists of more than 140 different partners in health and medical care in Europe – everything from large commercial companies to public organizations, such as universities and healthcare regions. These partners should be able to benefit from the services and products developed within the network. The purpose of EIT Health is to contribute to the development of health care for the benefit of the citizens.
Region Skåne is one of the network’s Core Partners, which makes it possible for companies related to the Skåne innovation system to apply for funding from EIT Health. Region Skåne’s decision to be a Core Partner has also given SmiLe Incubator in Lund opportunities to welcome European startups in its incubator environment within the Accelerator program Bridgehead. Innovation Skåne coordinates the network in southern Sweden on behalf of Region Skåne.
Most applications for this year’s Accelerator Program must be submitted in mid or late March 2019. Anyone who is uncertain about which part of the program they should apply for is welcome to contact Christos Vaitsis@eithealth.eu who works in the Scandinavian node of EIT Health.
